Hulu released a trailer for its upcoming miniseries based on Rebecca Godfrey’s Under the Bridge.

Godfrey’s book, published by Simon & Schuster in 2005, is the nonfiction account of the 1997 beating and drowning murder of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old in the British Columbia city of Saanich, near Victoria. Six people were convicted of the murder. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus called the book “a tour-de-force of true crime reportage.”

The series is created by Quinn Shephard (Not Okay) and stars Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & the Six) as Godfrey and Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) as police officer Cam Bentland. Other cast members include Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife), Matt Craven (The Last Thing He Told Me), and Anoop Desai (What We Do in the Shadows).

The trailer opens with Bentland saying, “This girl, Reena Virk, she’s been missing for three days.” Later, she says to Godfrey, “You don’t step foot in Victoria in 10 years, and you show up in the middle of my homicide investigation?”

“I’m writing a book,” Keough says. “People will tell me things they’re not going to tell you.”

Later, in a voiceover, Keough says, “This is a tale of horror and wonder, of innocence and beauty, violence and sin. This story would haunt the island for years to come. It forever changed a fact that young girls were the ones we were supposed to protect, not be protected from.”

Under the Bridge is scheduled to premiere on April 17.
