Tom Selleck stopped by the Today show to discuss his new memoir, You Never Know.

Selleck’s book, published Tuesday by Dey Street/HarperCollins, tells the story of his life and career as an actor known for his roles on the television series Magnum, P.I. and Blue Bloods and in the films Three Men and a Baby and Quigley Down Under.

A critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, “Unless the author is a master of deception, the text is like the man himself: witty, charming, and honest. A celebrity memoir worth reading.”

Asked by co-host Jenna Bush Hager whether he ever thought he would write a memoir, Selleck responded, “I didn’t. I’ve had, obviously, an interesting life, but I didn’t have the kind of trauma or newsworthy events I had to recover from, and I didn’t have those kind of hooks. So it took a while, and I just felt I had something to share [after] 50-plus years of work.”

Co-host Hoda Kotb asked how the title of the memoir applied to his life.

“I had an accidental career,” Selleck said. “I was at USC studying business and playing basketball, or I should say, riding the bench on the basketball team, and a lot of things happened that I was very fortunate about. I grew up in the city where the business is. I did The Dating Game and something else, and somebody saw me, and one of the studios had a talent program, and I fooled them.”
