The Wonders of the Weather

BY MEGAN LABRISE • May 24, 2021

With Tristan Gooley's astonishing new book, you, too, can predict the (hyperlocal) weather.

On this week’s episode, Tristan Gooley discusses The Secret World of Weather: How to Read Signs in Every Cloud, Breeze, Hill, Street, Plant, Animal, and Dewdrop (The Experiment, May 25).

Gooley is the bestselling author of The Nature Instinct and How to Read Water. Known by the sobriquet The Natural Navigator—or “The Sherlock Holmes of Nature,” according to the BBC—he has led expeditions on five continents, climbed mountains in three, and is the only living person to have both flown and sailed solo across the Atlantic.

In The Secret World of Weather, Gooley guides readers through an amazing assemblage of clues—in the sky, on the ground, and all around—that can help us understand and predict the weather.Birds, trees, clouds, leaves, rivulets of water, dew and frost: All offer profound insights into how the weather may affect us on a given day, and how we affect the weather. In sharing a lifetime’s worth of exploration and insight, he awakens readers to the wonders of the weather and our respective microclimates.

Gooley and host Megan Labrise talk about what “natural navigation” looks like in practice; the secret world of weather; communication between the environment and its inhabitants; natural navigation as science and art; what our senses can tell us about the weather; a few natural signs listeners can start searching for; and much more.

Then editors Vicky Smith, Laura Simeon, and Laurie Muchnick join with their reading recommendations for the week.
