Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man will come wagging and barking into movie theaters next year, Deadline reports.

Universal Pictures announced that an animated film adaptation of Pilkey’s popular series of graphic novels for children will hit screens on Jan. 31, 2025.

A spinoff of his bestselling Captain Underpants books, Pilkey’s series debuted in 2016 with Dog Man, which introduced the titular character, a police officer with the head of a dog who has sworn to protect his city from evildoers. Ten more books followed, many featuring punny titles like Lord of the Fleas, For Whom the Ball Rolls, and Grime and Punishment. The newest installment, The Scarlet Shedder, is slated for publication in March.

A stage musical based on the series debuted in 2019 in New York and has played in Los Angeles and Dallas, Texas.

The film adaptation will be directed by Peter Hastings, known for producing series including Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Hastings also executive produced the series The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, based on Pilkey’s character, which ran on Netflix from 2018 to 2019; a follow-up series, The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants in Space, was released on the streaming service in 2020.
