As a writer one of the key advantages to self-publication is the ability to work on what I want, when I want, and I refuse to be pigeonholed into a certain category. I'm a writer that likes working across different genres and my reading reflects that kind of thinking too. Some of my stories were begun with novels in mind but ran out of steam and were published either as a long short story or as a novella.

The Scribe Cover
HISTORICAL FICTION

The Scribe

BY Liam Mullen

A novel dramatizes the life of the Apostle Luke and the days of Jesus’ ministry.

Luke is born to Cesari Ciccone, a Roman senator, in a fit of tragedy. Luke’s mother, Augusta, dies in childbirth, a terrible loss for the family. A seer prophesies that Luke will grow up to be a great scribe, one who will write a historically significant chronicle of the birth and evolution of Christianity. This prediction concerns Cesari given the persecution that Christians suffer at the hands of Romans. But, moved by the death of his mother, Luke decides to become a physician, thinking this is his best opportunity to help humankind. With a combination of both literary invention and impressively rigorous historical research, Mullen tracks the spiritual development of Luke and his eventual fulfillment of his destiny to pen a new Gospel, one that would change the world. As the seer foresees, “People will be enthusiastic and enthralled by a story of a baby king born to a virgin mother of Galilee and her husband Joseph, a simple carpenter. They will see the weight of the event from the importance shown by the three wise men: and by others of important standing in the community. And lastly, they will empathize with the death of the man, and they will rejoice with his Resurrection.” In this ambitious novel, the author ably constructs the time and the lives of the story’s principal figures, including Jesus, John the Baptist, and the Apostle Paul, and also furnishes a meticulously authentic account of the era’s political turmoil with a particular emphasis on the plights of early Christians. A refreshingly full portrayal of Luke emerges, one that highlights his life as a man and not merely a theological icon. But the book lacks an immersive literary quality—the writing is static and the story’s pace is too slow.

A historically captivating but artistically uneven tale about Luke.

Bio

Ricky Weir is a man with a past. He returns to Vietnam, a country he once hated to work on its biodiversity programs and hopes that by doing so he can help to repair some of the damage he had inflicted in his younger, earlier days. Ricky had been a flight lieutenant with the USAF tasked with spreading Agent Orange over large parts of Vietnam. The story explores how he was shot down and imprisoned in Hanoi before being repatriated back to the States when the war was over. In some ways Hana Nguyen is a woman with a past but it is a past that she doesn't like talking about. A microbiologist, she's part of a team helping to contain threats to Vietnam's new biodiversity projects. She finds herself drawn to the American biodiversity expert but will their love survive when she finds out that Weir helped the spread of Agent Orange and perhaps had a hand in the death of her parents.

Darerca

Darerca is the sister of Saint Patrick and a holy woman in her own right. It's said that she married twice and that her seventeen sons became bishops and that her daughters also followed saintly paths. The tale opens in the late 4th century before sweeping into the 5th and closing in the 6th just as the monasteries were growing stronger. The story is an expansion of my earlier work 'Paddy' and indeed may incorporate that fine work. A tale of early Ireland.

Exile

Exile continues the story of The Nationalists as Tony McAnthony, the journalist, settles into his new life in America and the timeline advances through the roaring twenties, the thirties, the war years, and the Kennedy years in the sixties and seventies. Many of the characters that appeared in The Nationalists will also play a role in this new work, in particular, that of Pairic O'Toole who left soldiering behind to become a Franciscan and who finds himself incarcerated in Auschwitz during the war years. New characters are also introduced like Big Emily, a teacher in the US with a new vision for education but who finds herself thwarted by the effects of the Depression. Exile is a story about the Irish people, but not exclusively so, and paves the way for the third book in this trilogy: The Irish Diaspora.

Frontier Law

Frontier Law follows the exploits of Texas Ranger Frank Sirocco when he rides into San Ysidro to investigate the murder of two colleagues. Up against a deadly band of killers, gunfighters and renegades, Sirocco will need all of his wits and guns to survive this one. Fortunately, help arrived from unexpected sources. A short extract is given below: They had him dead to rights. There was no doubt they were going to kill him. Sirocco braced himself for the bullets. They said you never heard the one that killed you. All eyes were on the lawman. Nobody was watching the padre. He suddenly screamed "no", and all eyes flicked in his direction. In the same moment the padre's hand flicked the holstered gun from Hendrick's holster, and he slid it along the polished bar towards the Ranger. Sirocco didn't hesitate. He was already moving. His first shot blasted Pringle off his feet, the shock of the moment plastered all over the killer's face. Sirocco's second shot blasted the lanky gunman backwards as that man got off a shot, but his bullet was aimed at an empty spot. Sirocco was moving in a tight crouch and his shot was more measured, deliberate. It was delivered with deadly accuracy. A gritty western and book one of the Frontier series.

Manhunt

Mano

Mano. There's a new cop in Hawaii, and he doesn't take prisoners. This is the tagline which I've used for Mano, a tough cop in Hawaii whose brief includes keeping terrorism out of Hawaii. The tale is a post 911 piece and concerns the hunt for an ISIS terrorist cell intent on carrying out a dirty bomb attack on the USS Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbour. The group is led by the fanatical Hakim, a Saudi terrorist who used to work as an executioner in his home country. When he finds out that there is a tough cop called Mano out to stop him, he makes a near fatal error of judgement by ordering a hit on one of Hawaii's top cops - a move that will bring in the FBI and Homeland Security - and makes Mano aware of the threat against him. Mano is already a marked man because of his previous undercover work on the Chinese triads. His security detail has always been aware of threats made against him and are constantly in a heightened state of alert anyway. Mano has the cream of HPD already working within his squad, besides his own security detail, experienced cops like The Seeker, Nui, and Pono. Together they form a formidable team which Hakim will have trouble overcoming. The story carries a lot of pace and action and strong characterization which ultimately will propel the story forward to a nail-biting conclusion.

The Nationalists

Anyone with an interest in Irish history will enjoy The Nationalists, a novel which opens during the 1916 Easter Rising, extends to the Black and Tan War and culminates in the Irish Civil War of 1922. The story opens with Tony McAnthony meeting Angela O'Sullivan in the GPO during the Rising. Imprisoned after the Rising, Tony must fight for the woman he loves. He is forced to make hard life-changing choices when Lucy, Angela's best friend, is raped by the Black and Tans, the hated British auxiliary forces. Tony must now make a choice between the pen and the gun. Angela is taken aback by what he decides and as a headstrong Kerry woman she goes her own way. Their paths will collide again later. Father John Troy also has difficult choices to make. His decision to render aid to rebels lands him in prison and on a collision course with Rome, the Irish hierarchy and fellow priests. The Rising of course was more than a military thing. A cultural revolution took place in tandem. The Nationalists explores this aspect as well including the Abbey Theatre. The story interweaves factual and fictional characters - men like Eamon de Valera and Michael Collins. The story isn't completely set in Dublin, but moves to Kerry, Wales and London and moves on from the Rising to the elections of 1918, the Black and Tan War and the Irish Civil War. Everyone is affected. Nobody escapes unscathed.
