THE RUNAWAY GIANT

In a nice variation on the theme of the melting snowman, four winter-weary animals are roused by the sight of ""a fearful, fearsome giant in the valley."" As each goes to investigate, the giant gets smaller--and the animals grow braver; they decide to scare him away with their own ""fearful, fearsome noises,"" and they succeed. All that is left of the ""cowardly giant"" is his hat and his carrot nose and his walking stick on the snow-covered ground. As she demonstrated in The Rain Puddle, the author is adept at the rhythmically repetitious tale for the very young; here she adds an element of suspense that will keep children guessing until the next-to-the-last page. In reddish-brown and icy blue. Mamoru Funai contrasts the rabbit snug in his hollow log with the skeletal land-scape the tiny trail of animal step-marks with the great outreaching sun. This is the rare book that's just right in every way for reading aloud to threes and fours, with a special bonus for groups, who can share the animals' sounds and their surprise, and laugh together afterward.
