BEAR ISLAND

Bear Island is a cheerless pile in the Arctic Circle upon which the splintery Morning Rose unloads those members of a wildly suspicious film company who are still alive after a rash of poisoning deaths and a disappearance aboard ship. Mal de mer becomes overwhelmingly mal within the island's packed huts, and Dr. Marlowe, whose bedside cover hides some essential knowledge of Nazi gold and its prospectors, still cannot prevent more murders. But at last he runs down a triple-dealing villain and his unsavory cabal. There is a pervasive chill that could snap a pickaxe and incessant, sleepless snooping, but the denouements do not give the reader half an anticipated chance. Still it jumps across the Arctic ice. . . .
