A recapturing of the pageant of the days of Charlemagne through a new version of the old Roland chanson. Mrs. Collier has done research in all sorts of primary sources hitherto ignored except by the scholars, and has built, from this material, a colorful, dramatic and swift-moving chronicle, incorporating the familiar incidents and adding many new ones. Of undoubted scholarship, this version, written in collaboration with Jeanette Eaton, should replace the heavy-going Baldwin Song of Roland, and take a permanent place on the shelves of children's rooms, everywhere, in public and private libraries. The Frank E. Schoonover illustrations and the format of the book are worthy of the substance.
