Norway from June to Christmas and the perils of sea voyage are the mainstays of a warm, but mild and orthodox contemporary Scandinavian tale. In the summer young Arne whose father runs a fish packing business, thrills to the prospect of visiting his uncle's saeter in the mountains. In the fall older brother Gustav sails to South America and Arne has his troubles keeping in the good graces of the new young schoolmaster. The perils of Gustav's ship on its storm-lashed return, are averted in time for a happy Christmas as Arne and the schoolmaster build a fire on a fjord cliff. There's plenty of kringler and gammelost between bouts and boats and Frank Nicholas' line drawings show interiors, mountains and people in healthy detail.
