Being a good wife to ruthless, rich, crooked and cruel Carter Marden has resulted in turning beautiful Garnette into a slave of her husband's every desire both both physically and emotionally. This situation in turn has made of their eldest son a mean-spirited would-be rebel and of the younger son a slobbering delinquent. For years Garnette has daydreamed about a perfect lover and when he appears in the person of a young, handsome and virile musician she is shocked into realizing her situation by his refusal to have her as wife or mistress because she is a slave emotionally or-as her sons call her--a zombie. Thus enlightened, she leaves home and husband, goes away with her youngest son and enters the state university with plans of becoming a teacher. Although not believable in its conclusion and not precisely enjoyable reading, this novel is written with a rather reckless engergy and vivid detail that lifts it above the commonplace woman's novel.
