In an effort to show that all size is relative, the author uses only the words ""big"" and ""small"", ignoring other equally descriptive words that are just as relative. This lack is particularly noticeable in connection with a double page spread of objects of varying sizes next to each other. This is a kindergarten book and, these days, math readiness is reaching the same degree of emphasis accorded reading readiness without anywhere near the same number of teaching aids available. Teachers concentrating on the single concept of big and small may well be satisfied with this effort. However, those children grasping the point quickly will have only Aliki's bright, humorous pictures to keep them awake.
