Christopher of Sleep Out (1973) takes the ferry to visit his friend Gray, who lives on an island where the two boys play pirate, cook hamburgers and marshmallows in the fireplace when a storm knocks out the electricity, and lose and find Christopher's dog Bodger. This is one of those rare examples of the low-keyed, commonplace play experience that never seems contrived; Christopher's reactions ("" 'Look! I can lie down on the wind!' shouted Chris, leaning into it"") strike just the right note, and the sand-and-earth toned watercolors are casual without sacrificing individualizing detail. A perfect visit.
