This should make good background preparation reading, in the story of the friendship that sprang up between Flavius, son of a general, and Ariphro, a Greek slave. The time is the height of Rome's power, and Flavius' father has returned from victory in Greece, bringing with him a Greek slave to serve as his son's pedagogue. With deepening companionship, Flavius realizes disturbing elements as he learns that Ariphron is also suffering in separation from his young wife, Clymene. Flavius urges freedom for them both, but it takes an accident to bring the showdown that persuades Flavius' parents as well. This is good Snedeker-after too long a gap.
