A story of Will Prendergast, the Sons of Liberty and the famous march on New York against the tyrannical Hudson River landowners in 1766, centers around young Jared Marsh and his family, who move to a farm on Philipse Manor after its former owner, Tibbetts, has been jailed for not paying his rent. It is only after they move in that Jared discovers this through Lem, Tibbetts' son, who has remained on the land. When Prendergast and his followers rise the boys join them and though there is tragedy in Tibbetts' cruel death and the fighting that follows, the Marsh family and Lem are able to move to Vermont and the freedom of their own land. A good historical, this follows the events of the Prendergast affair accurately and with an eye for its meaning on the political as well as the personal level.
