YOU'RE THE BOSS

The autobiography of an honest but practical politician. Flynn's familiarity in the country outside New York rests largely on his chairmanship of the National Democratic Committee during Roosevelt's third term campaign. This is a political -- not a personal- portrait, and an inside view of machine politics over the past thirty years. From a boyhood in the Bronx, Flynn entered Teny in his early twenties as Sheriff of the Bronx, then as Boss. He operated through the Al Smith defeat, the regime of popular, personable Jimmy Walker, the Roosevelt election for Governor, the first presidential campaign, maintaining his friendship with Roosevelt through the years and writing retrospectively about him. He also defends boss politics, with the title as exoneration -- ""the real boss is you""... The appeal here is obviously masculine, obviously political, and largely New York area; one questions the extent of interest in Flynn, and his book fails to supply the lack.
