Indiana and Missouri in 1879 is the setting of another Wabash country story for girls by the author. The Wabash Knows the Secret (1951) was set a decade or so later than this, but held the same warmness and the value of family solidarity. Here, it is 16 year old Julia Edwards who wants both to teach and to establish her own happy home life, who must win out against the odds of pioneering, a tyrannical father and a misplaced affection for an irresponsible Indian boy. When she is convinced of her love for Wingo, the Miami Indian, Julia has to go with her family to Kansas, but incensed by her father's iron rule, settles with her sister and brother in law in the Ozarks, where she runs a country school for a year. There, too, she meets young Dr. Sam Boots with whom she finds her long desired security.
