THE NEW EMILY POST'S ETIQUETTE

It's over fifty years since the unimpeachable cicerone published the sacred text which has gone through twelve editions and now has been altogether revised for modern times -- when hope chests and mourning bands are disappearing along with, thank God, engraved children's cards. Columnist Elizabeth Post, also head of the ongoing Emily Post Institute, covers all the major categories (terms of address, letters, restaurant and home manners, traveling, clothes, etc., etc., with 200 pages on those big occasions -- the engagement and the wedding -- in other words everything from how to eat your soup, to dispose of your crumpled sugar packet (that may vanish too) or even handle (hang up) the obscene phone call. 931 pages plus illustrations plus really an enormous amount of explicit, sensible advice for the times when you need to be spared anything from expense to embarrassment.
