THE GOLDEN HIND

Francis Drake is without a doubt one of the most colorful figures of Elizabethan England. In this story of his voyages, his exploits against the Spanish pirates, his conflicts with mutinous and jealous men, and his explorations of waters on which English ships had never sailed before, the author is strongly partial to her hero. Elizabeth Thacher Hurd, who has written many books for young readers, boldly conveys the man, his accomplishments and his times in simple terms, and it is considerably more stimulating than other informative texts written for beginning readers.
