MARY ON ROLLER SKATES

More with Mary: this time she breaks her ankle roller skating and has to amuse herself on one leg and wonder whether the other will heal in time for camp (it does, of course). She should be an adorable little imp, what with trying to ride a bicycle and skate with a leg still in a cast or pinning her new dress together with a neck at each end (naturally Grandmother can fix it), but she comes across as a little too cute and well-behaved. She endures the pain of the broken leg (""Oh, OUCH!"" squeaked Mary. ""I'm fine, Mom, but it does hurt"") and never knows the boredom of the immobilized; friend Mildred and Mary's mother add little besides alliteration. Active girls will prefer skating to Mary's cast-off capers (and those with broken ankles won't believe it a bit).
