THE TOPBY TURVY FAMILY

Brock is uneven -- but this is a good Emma Brock, and her illustrations in color make this a gay and charming book. Good pioneer story of the Minnesota prairie, in the Laura Ingalls Wilder tradition. The story revolves around the coming of the teacher for the one-room school of the little girl's excitement, the small boy's resentment of the prospect of school. They belong to a family in which everything goes wrong, from picking up a skunk kitten to the bottom falling out of the teacher's trunk. Entertainingly told, with a flavor of might-be-true.
