The name prescription as before, picaresque and surgical, as the early 19th century backgrounds the story of Michael Stone, forced against his will to doctor the slave ship of rich blackbirder Adam Leigh. Seduced by Leigh's daughter-in-law, the Lady Marian, Michael does not forget her, even when- after jumping ship off the coast of Florida, he is rescued by Dimity Parker and marries her. Once again working for Leigh, a second meeting with Marian brings also the realization that she had deliberately used him to sire a son. War, plague, revolt, the firing of the slave farm bring a fairly strident finish and Michael, after rescuing Marian and their son, returns to find that Dimity has died and that he is free for the woman he more truly loves. Sex and sensationalism keep this fairly overstimulated.
