CROCODILE BEAT

Down by the river in the heat of the day/the crocodile sleeps and awaits his prey"": here, an eclectic group of animals including ducks, elephants, a flamingo, and a lion-king complete with a crown and a throne. But, fierce as the crocodile is, the lion is ready for him, cramming his throne feet first into the croc's jaws and thus preserving his subjects. The rhythmic text has a pleasant, contagious beat. Mullins' brightly colored torn-paper collages, employing translucent materials and a variety of skillfully devised textures, are full of fun and high spirits; the many-toothed crocodile is especially splendid. Generous size makes this appropriate for large group sharing; subtle details reward closer study.
