A different kind of race between the hare and the tortoise dresses up an old adage in new clothing to present an object lesson in humorous terms. At the suggestion of Mr. Fox, both Mr. Hare and Mr. Turtle become participants in a contest to see who can line up the most friends by the next Friday. Using all his best advertising techniques, Mr. Hare exacts agreements from several acquaintances but, when the time comes for them to testify, none can see that they have developed any degree of friendship with the gadabout. Mr. Turtle, who has spent the week chatting with another turtle, wins with his one valuable new friend.
