If it hadn't been that the famous Chief of the Paris detective bureau had an ordinarily unassuming, shy wife, the clues that lead to clearing up a baffling charge of murder might not have been traced. What a white hat and a pair of custom made shoes had to do with a dual murder and a passport forging racket provides the intricate web of a not too completely convincing achievement on the part of the Chief. Despite some loose threads and unresolved clues, it makes good reading.
