Short and mostly sharp little rhymes depicting common safety precautions. ""At dinner all the children laughed/ At the jokes of Papa Bunny./ Young Peter tilted back his chair/ And roared--they were so funny!/ But oh! Too far! He grabbed the cloth/ To keep from getting hurt./ Poor Peter landed on the floor/ With everyone's desert!/ Chairs you tip may make you flip."" Other don'ts: leave toys on the stairs, cross without looking, nibble things in the medicine chest, swim alone. The illustrations feature animals enacting the proscribed behavior--and getting their just deserts, although the most severe dangers are not enumerated. Children who find no reassurance in books won't respond to the rhymes or drawings despite their immediacy and relevance, but the adult reader can enlarge upon the situation and take advantage of the closing lines which recapitulate the suggestions.
