Sara, just out of high school, is suddenly orphaned when her mother, an illustrious dress designer, is killed in a plane crash. Determined to follow the same original path her mother took, Sara detests everything that smacks of conventionality. With her fiance, Noah, she plans a bohemian life in which he will write great novels and she will inspire his genius. But Noah's decision to become an advertising copy writer and Sara's growing conviction that they do not, after all, share the same values shatters her dreams and she breaks with him. A job and a season of reflection teach Sara that human values cannot be pigeon-holed and that excitement is not a satisfactory substitute for animation. A thoughtful story which poignantly depicts a characteristic stage of intelligent adolescence.
