Fear of the Indian savages turns to love and respect for the gentle woman Nahomen, fear of life evolves into courage when the puny young Bostonian Malinda Fitzerald, sixteen, spends several months in the Russian Fort Ross on the West Coast. She teaches English to Nahomen and a young admirer, Zachar, learns to cook and clean in the Indian fashion, realizes that she is a desirable young lady. Rescuing her lifetime beau Alan Morison from a band of Spaniards, then seeing him apply to farming his love of nature (in preference to his father's shipping business) changes her attitude toward herself (she is no longer' weak and Cowardly) and toward him: she loves him and will follow him even though he's rebelling against his family. Overly explicated and predictably contrived, but not too sentimental--a pleasing historical, romance for undemanding girls.
