Utterly delightful, and a refreshing surprise to find so urbane and humorous and rare a spirit writing from a New York background. We are inclined to think that Pearsall Smith has a corner on essays and bits of philosophical humor, sage and witty chit-chat, reminiscences, literary and personal and cosmopolitan in flavor. Irwin Edman has a warmer human sympathy than Smith. An informal memoir, episodic, anecdotal in character. At a glance, it seems casual; closer study reveals deep undercurrents, a brilliant gift for swift pen pictures, a catholicity of appreciation and sympathy that makes this delightful from first to last. He assuredly lives up to the motto in his ""mental worship"" -- ""A professor of philosophy studies philosophy; a philosopher studies life."" -- Better still, Dr. Edman shares life.
