by Irwin Shapiro ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 20, 1948
Add one to the list of great American folk-lore work characters, for Shapiro, who has given us Casey Jones, John Henry, Davy Crockett and others, now does the story of Joe Magarac, the legendary hero of the steel mills. Joe was made of steel, he could make steel rails faster and better than anyone in the United States. And he did, until a Congressman told him to go back where he came from. Joe wanted his papers but he didn't want to stay where he wasn't wanted so he started to leave and take his steel with him. Things looked bad for the U.S.A. but everything got fixed up by a couple of right Americans. If this sounds obvious, it really isn't because it goes bouncing along with the swinging fun, loving characterization and language play which this author gives to his deservedly popular folk tales. Not to be limited to this age group only -- older boys and girls will like it too.
