RED RIVER ADVENTURE

In the series which has also included such titles as The Scarlet Force by T. Morris Longstreth, The Golden Trail by Pierre Berton, etc., this accounts in detail for the establishment of Selkirk's Red River Settlement which eventually became the city of Winnipeg. Told principally through Miles MacDonnell who became the first governor of the new colony, the text follows the complete chain of events from the beginnings of the idea with Selkirk, whose deep concern for the welfare of dispossessed Scotch and Irish farmers lead him to arrange for the purchase of the vast tract of land southwest of Lake Winnipeg. The well known quarrels between the Hudson's Bay Company and the Nor'westers, the mutinies among the colonists, food problems, and weather are all described as part of a long struggle to achieve permanence. A quiet book and unimaginatively written but one that lets exciting events speak for themselves.
