THE JAMES COCO DIET

James Coco, another alumnus of Every Diet Known to Man, solved his weight problem with this low-calorie, behavior-mod program from a North Carolina-based organization known as Structure House. (One of its originators began his work at Duke.) Readers are first treated to a bite-by-bite description of Coco's tribulations with other weightless regimens--including his flirtation with the idea of intestinal bypass surgery. (""You could lose all your hair,"" cautioned a surgeon. ""What hair?"" countered Coco.) Coco then presents the Structure House program, which aims to teach the over-weight completely new eating habits. The three main features are a low-calorie regimen, a rigid structure (so no choices need be made), and behavior modification--learning to eat with long pauses between bites, to chew thoroughly, and so on. The 21-days menus are reasonably appetizing (one of Coco's favorite pastimes is cooking), but undeniably low-cal: breakfasts offer the likes of 3/4 cup of cereal, or scrambled eggs with 2 egg whites and (apple) egg yolk; dinners comprise 5 ounces of steak, (apple) baked potato, (apple) cup of green beans, and so on. Absolutely nothing new, then--although readers who've been following Coco's progress via Johnny Carson Show appearances may be intrigued.
