THE PROMISE OF THE ROSE

Lovely Aruna is a ward of the powerful Mogul king, Akbar. When she reaches maturity- it is decided by him to wed her to a lofty noble who lives in a distant city. Aruna is reluctant to leave the court in which she has grown up and her despair is punctuated by her sudden love for a handsome stranger. When; after much political intrigue and machinations, it is revealed that Aruna's fiances and the stranger are one and the same, she graciously complies with the Sultan's command and prepares to assume the duties of a high-born Mogul woman. Set at a time contemporary to England's Queen Elizabeth, this slight love story gives much interesting information of that highly developed and organized Moslem society and of its uniquely versatile ruler who personally corresponded with England's famous queen. Jean Bothwell, whose previous novels on India have been successfully received, skillfully integrates history with romance in this politely exotic story of India.
