The author of The Man Dormant continues his investigation of the man of violence, in a tighter, less encumbered story of an unprincipled mercenary, Eric Rumbold. In 1946 he is ready to cash in on his forged food ticket racket in Marseilles, sets out for England via Spain, has several unsavory propositions en route, and settles for Fiona's request to murder her small son. He finds the government, in the person of Cassell, on guard against his presence and warning him to behave. In Scotland, in spite of Fiona's sister's distrust, he accomplishes his mission, and, in his attempt to escape, is caught by Cassell and given the chance to end his life. Cinematically speaking this is an effective exposure of an agent double who carries outlawry, licensed in practice during the war, into civilian life, and also a neat bit of intelligent melodrama.
