This strikes a new note in the fact that it is a story of big league baseball, rather than the conventional school or college story. A kid in the first season with the Brooklyn Dodgers makes good, wins his first sixteen games -- and then loses his curve and his speed as the result of a foolish prank. Then comes another chance -- this time as outfielder, and he does his part in helping the Dodgers win the pennant. Tunis knows his ball players and gives the reader a real appreciation of the spirit and the background of the big leaguers. Not up to The Iron Duke -- but good.
