This slip of a story, which could vaporize in one tear, takes place in the little village of Elverly in England--Robert Nathan country--where Matt comes to visit an old friend and mentor, the artist Dockhurst. He is guided there by Chloe, a wraith with red hair and bare feet, who vanishes forthwith. Later he learns of the girl who drowned near the weir, eight years earlier. Of course you'll have guessed that she's C . . . e who keeps coming every day while her mother (who doesn't live with her father who is D . . . . . . . t) tells him ""she is a madness and she is not real and she is not there."" No, she has become ""otherwise"" and is trapped between two worlds until. . . . Mr. Claire (you won't be able to fill in the dots--it's a pseudonym) keeps his story this side of sentiment before it disappears otherwhere.
