THE COUCH TRIP

Mr. Kolb is an anthracite-black humorist (Getting Straight--1967) whose rowdy talent is here applied to a crash program of sex and action therapy. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish between them and the skin sessions are the result of an energized, liberated libido. A presumptive Dr. Baird takes over the Los Angeles practice of an older Dr. Marlin who has cracked up, the victim of his occupational disease. Matlin's in London, sightseeing and healing himself until he hears that the real Baird has died and begins to wonder who might be handling his clientele. An impostor, to be sure, but he has wonderfully successful results with most of Matlin's tong indulged patients: he fixes up a Reverend who has lost faith in himself and in God with a bored matron who needs to be serviced; he puts down a young man who's been getting his highs on anything from nutmeg to mace; and he finally settles his own problem--the wife who has tossed him out. . . . Unless you're prudish and/or reverential, you'll find that these annals of free association are verbalized with high humor and unbuttoned aplomb.
