This novel of a Spanish-Indian boy's trip up the California coast in the days of post-Cortez explorations has its touching moments and makes a good historical adventure. Jailed for insubordination, resentful Tenoch gets his chance to sail on the San Salvador, second of a two ship expedition. The other ship is the Vittoria and among all hands- officers and men- is the network of personal problems, particularly Tenoch's whose Spanish father had left his Indian mother when Tenoch was a baby- to hunt for gold in Guatemala. Mutiny and prejudice smoulder on sea and land; there is the added question of local Indians as the ships go from place to place. But Tenoch begins to see that there are good Spaniards as well as bad and his growing maturity prepares him for the discovery that Olmeda, captain of the Vittoria is his father. Searching and well handled in its many elements.
