DEATH IN SPRINGTIME

Florence's Captain Maestrangelo (Death of a Dutchman) now moves from the city to the bleak hills surrounding it--hunting the kidnappers of American student Deborah Maxwell, with help from the local Brigadier who knows every hut and rut and every Sardinian shepherd in the area. But the truth about the girl and her life is hard to come by; even when the kidnappers release her rich, newly remarried father and her best friend Katrine Nilsen, there's a shortage of helpful information. So the savvy, experienced Captain labels this an amateur crime. And he fears for the girl's life when the kidnapping plot shows signs of falling apart--with an assortment of subplots (local drug-dealing, a shepherd look, alike for Rudolph Valentino, a not-so-secret real estate deal) leading to a last desperate search and a tense climax. Like Nabb's previous mysteries: oddly diffuse, with a tendency to ramble--but an unpretentious, solid little plot this time, meshing nicely with (as before) fine local color and closely-observed characters.
