WHAT CABRILLO FOUND

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a sixteenth century Portuguese conquistador, took adventure in his stride. Fearless and dedicated to bringing Catholicism to the heathen, he participated with Cortes in his capture of Mexico City and was a member of Panfilo de Navaez's Mexican expedition. It was, however, with considerable enthusiasm that he pursued his last mission, a mission on which he believed himself to have uncovered a route to the Far East. Dying of a wound sustained on the journey, Cabrillo was unaware that what he actually was exploring was the coast of California, San Diego Bay, Santa Catalina, and Santa Barbara. Maud Hart Lovelace tells the story of this outstanding navigator and explorer both in terms of his own congenial personality and in context of the period of Spanish expansion into the new world. A reliable supplement to high school study of early American history.
