The author of Shadrach. Hurry Home, Candy and others, turns again to his native Holland for another story of children and animals in the familiar wistful prose style that is close to the movement of life itself. In the tiny sea town of Shora, Lina- one of Shora's six school children- wonders why there are no storks around, because storks come to all the other villages. Her queries set off a chain of incidents wherein the five boys, Lina, their teacher and several other Shorans become engaged in a rather frantic search for wheels to put on their roofs- as nest bases for the birds. It does not take long; much of the book is written about the searches of a simple afternoon. But in the process Shorn and its people live and change in many ways and as a climax there is a touching rescue of two storks stranded by a storm. A long book with its gentle, minute details and character studies- this may demand a special interest for enjoyment.
