Essentially a gallery of marine animals from the plankton-eating clam to the ""shark [which] eats the tuna which eats the codfish which eats the herring which eats the plankton"" . . .and on to the great blue whale (also a plankton eater) and such bizarre ""deep down"" creatures as the gulper and grasshopper fish. Even the simplest Selsam text does more than enumerate, and the food chain is a unifying concept here. But it's the clear colors and subtle textures of Hamberger's paintings that invite leisurely, intent examination.
