THE ACROBATS

.....walking the tightrope of despair and hope meet, mingle and part in 1951 in Valencia during a fiesta week. The Larkins, a mismated American couple, Derek, whose manhood was lost in the Spanish Civil War, Andre, a Canadian who is undetermined, Chaim, expatriate who has sold his passport, the Krauses, still believing in a Hitlerian world, and Toni who acts as catalytic agent for events to come. Kraus haunts Andre so that he may not have Toni; the Communist Guillermo contracts Andre; Toni wants Andre and Canada but is drawn to Kraus; while Andre, running away and still making no choice, drifts from one to another in the grouping until at last, confronted by Kraus, death finishes his questioning. An impressionistic parade of polyglots, the casualties of a confused and confusing civilization, emphasizes portraiture rather than plot. The market here is difficult to define.
