THE DEFENDER

An unusual and appealing story, touched with the beauty of the pristine, remote mountain country of northern Siberia and the dignity of man receiving his strength from nature and a belief in God. Turgen, a mountain shepherd, bereft of wife and child, lived in harmony with his valley neighbors until an evil rumor spread that Turgen, because of his defense of the wild mountain rams, was consorting with the devil. But Turgen, secure in the knowledge that by feeding the wild rams he is caring for God's creatures, remains steadfast and alone except for the companionship of a nearby widow and her two children. There is a triumphant ending in which his care of an injured ram, wonderful dreams in which a Great Spirit talks to him, and a joyous wedding, become part of a pattern of Turgen's life and faith. Of interest to all children on many levels, as it supplies animal interest, a good story and an enchanting glimpse of an unfamiliar region. The illustrations by Claire and George Louden have power and a suitable quality of serenity.
