FREDERIC CHOPIN: Later Years

The second volume of the Chopin biography (the first was published last Fall) adds singularly little. The trials and tribulations of the delicate and patriotic young Polish musician from his leaving his native land to his death in Paris are faithfully recorded, while, inevitably I suppose, all mention of his tempestuous emotional life is avoided, and he emerges as a sickly, fretful, restless musician, who travels from one place to another. The dates of his concerts- the apathy in Vienna- the success in Paris -- a few of his letters to Poland, and the details of his friends' sympathy and anxiety can hardly be viewed as a full picture of these later years. An emotionally diluted portrait. As usual some of his compositions, in simplified form, are included.
