SISTERS, LONG AGO

A teen-ager embarks on a spiritual exploration of reincarnation. Willow is glad for an escape to the beach, away from the preoccupations of home and her sister Sarah's leukemia. Then, while swimming, she nearly drowns; scenes of a past life--that of an Egyptian girl, Kalos--flash before her and awaken in her a consciousness that she has lived before the here and now. Willow's attempt to understand reincarnation (by seeking the advice of experts) empowers her, as she learns to tap into her spiritual sphere. When Sarah dies, Willow can let go, knowing that her soul will find her sister's in another life. Reincarnation will be a new subject to some readers, and Kehret's book competently explains some of the intricacies of this belief system without getting mired in details. Skeptics, however, will not be easily drawn in by the story, which sometimes reads more like a case study than a compelling or credible work of fiction.
