THE WILD ROCKET

Mrs. Hoffman's previous books include one on cooking and two on sewing. Perhaps this is why her first attempt at fiction turns out to be more of a girl's book than a boy's, even though it is about a lonely 15-years-old orphan, living in the North Carolina countryside with an unsympathetic, tobacco-farming uncle and his family. Alec is consumed with rocket-fever, manages to build one of his own design, and goes 50 miles away to the seashore to find a place to set it off. He is badly hurt by the explosion but because of it he eventually finds a new home with people who appreciate his scientific interests and wish to encourage them. There is a heavy dose of heroics and a ""hooray for togetherness"" family that will undoubtedly make this story more palatable to adventurous girls than to boys looking for a story about rockets.
