THE CHAMPAGNE CAMPAIGN

In August, 1944, the First Airborne Task Force of 10,000 men was dropped on the French Riviera in an unorthodox, ""almost manic"" mission which was ultimately a supreme success. While a tight formation has been planned, many involved were scattered during the jump and quickly helped by the underground. The story of the campaign is told with interesting sidelights -- from the champagne parties in Nice to the German unit which was ""talked into surrendering"" by two GI prisoners. A sequel to The Devil's Brigade (1966) -- informal, enthusiastic, and making good and considerable use of the participants' own stories
