CAPTAIN CONAN

Winner of the 1934 Prix Goncourt -- a novel based on personal experiences of the French army in the Balkans. A man's book, essentially -- good picture of postwar occupation conditions -- military data, via trials for misdemeanor, etc. Norbert tells the story in the first person of his friendship for Conan, made a misfit by the war, and in constant peace time hot water, finding an outlet for surplus energies in debauchery and violently masculine insubordination. Pretty strong meat -- very well handled.
