THE SILENT HOSTAGE

The presumed ""accident"", it is actually prearranged, which takes the life of Jonathan Heritage leaves his widow, Kate, completely innocent of his suspect associations and ungrieving- while a public hero he had been a cold and cruel husband. Still politically naive, and unwilling to be involved, Kate goes to Yugoslavia where she is confused by the language of discretion and evasion and caught in the affairs of Kiraly Andras, who attracts her, a sombre, steady figure who has survived Communist pressures; Lili, a young girl, hoping to escape to England but being used as a contact; Elemer, her Communist lover and watchdog. And murder makes it no longer possible for Kate to sustain her wishful innocence and ignorance of her dead husband's former disloyalties and her own obligations now.... A third novel of subversive intrigue which is really intriguing- supple and polished.
