The author's previous titles in art/anthropology have been --The Art of Ancient Egypt, The Art of Ancient Greece and the recent Art of Lands in the Bible (1963, p. 112, J-46). The present book is as handsome as the others. For the most part, the illustrations are allowed to speak for themselves. The text supplies dates, regions, tribes and information that is not self-evident in the pictures. The big, black and white photographs are set against blocks and bands of rich color to excellent effect. The arts and artifacts of the many tribes native to North America are shown together with brief explanations of the factors that influenced the various designs and choice of materials. This is a difficult book to place for age group. It should prove to be useful in early grades studying Indians and needing accurate, visual ideas. The book would be equally at home in adult collections as a quick survey of Indian Art.
